Chapter 19

It seemed forever before the sound of those voices shifted from the vicinity, allowing Essie to breathe.

“They didn’t find us, Aunt Sessie,” Edric whispered.

“They did not,” she said, mildly. She strived not to choke, equally determined to keep Edric from seeing how truly frightened she was.

“I couldn’t understand all they said. But I was quiet.”

She swallowed, wanting to agree but her voice refused to cooperate.

“You are the King of Hiding, sire,” Alessandro offered in her stead.

She could gladly have kissed Alessandro in that moment. The shocking thought embarrassed her, making her fingers tremble. She hugged Edric tightly and pressed her lips to his unruly hair. “Thank you, Signore,” she whispered.

“Why are we whispering, Aunt Sessie?” To her relief Edric seemed content to stay in their game.

“We hide, they must seek,” she said.

He nodded eagerly, covering his mouth with his hand.

She pierced Alessandro with narrowed eyes. “Who were they, sir?” She kept her voice mild, cognitive of Edric’s natural curiosity.

“I don’t know.” He frowned, then glanced at the prince. It was clear he wanted to ask who they spoke about, but Alessandro curbed the inclination—admirably so. Instead, he whispered. “We must return. They will be wondering where you and his Highness are.”

Essie nodded, but to leave now could place Edric in grave danger. She drummed her fingers on her thigh gathering her thoughts. Nothing brilliant came to mind, however, save for one single idea. She blew out a pursed breath and shot her glance to Edric.

It might work.
